Job Description

We are currently seeking an Electrical Power Systems Engineer for our Prince George, BC office. In this position, you will be responsible for the development, design, and delivery of electrical power systems projects for our customers including generator interconnections, protection systems upgrade, harmonics mitigation, and designs of substation and power distribution systems. With each project, you will be responsible for solving problems throughout the design process from the conception of the design through to commissioning, while establishing effective working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities may include but are not necessarily limited to the following:

  • Estimate, plan, manage and coordinate small to mid-sized electrical power system projects
  • Perform engineering studies and provide solutions to problems of varying complexities using simulation software such as SKM Power*Tools, ETAP or EasyPower
  • Design and commission medium voltage and high voltage electrical power systems
  • Perform protection and control systems design and settings
    • Overall plant protection scheme design
    • AC/DC schematics, protection cabinet design and wiring
    • Detailed protection settings including large industrial transformer and generator protection
    • Synchronization schemes with multiple sync points
    • Load shedding schemes
    • Relay and meter digital communication network
  • Articulate design concepts to internal and external stakeholders
  • Prepare and evaluate tender and construction packages, including drawings, equipment and construction/installation specifications, and other supporting documentation
  • Provide project management, leadership, and technical guidance to a team of engineers and project stakeholders.

Job Requirements

When selecting candidates, we will be looking for the following essential skills, abilities, and experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years’ electrical power design experience (industrial) as a consultant engineer
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering
  • Registered, or eligible for registration, with EGBC
  • Practical Canadian or US industrial design experience involving medium and high voltage equipment
  • Experience with power system studies (short circuit, load flow, coordination, arc flash, large MV motor starting) using SKM, ETAP or EasyPower software.
  • Ability to define study criteria, complete simulations and write reports
  • Knowledge of protection and controls engineering
  • Knowledge of regulatory codes and standards, including CSA, NEC and IEEE
  • Commissioning and contractor supervision experience
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Ability and willingness to travel to domestic and international sites

Other valued, but non-essential skills, abilities, and experience include:

  • Transient stability studies for industrial plants
  • Harmonics study, large passive filter designs and rectifier upgrades
  • Operation and maintenance experience
  • Knowledge of pulp and paper, chemical and mining processes
  • Publication of technical papers and/or active involvement in professional associations/societies
